The Bulldog 12 Orange team, managed by Marc Lussier, won the 12u Battle of Cooperstown, a three day event in Cooperstown ending Sunday, July 11; making it their third tournament victory of the 2010 season!

On an unseasonably warm weekend in late March the Bulldogs showed a promise of power hitting, a strength of precise pitching, and a secret of splendid fielding.  This all came to a perfect head in the balmy bright sunshine of July in Cooperstown, New York.

The Bulldogs were the class of the Cooperstown Tournament at Beaver Valley, winning easily every one of the six games they had played.  Their opponents were from as far away as Michigan and as close as Cooperstown with Yonkers rounding out the diamond.  The Dogs won each game regardless of the opponent with superb pitching and clutch hitting, but what separated them from the rest was their staggering almost flawless fielding.

On Friday in the second game, the Dogs in the field, a man on third and no outs, the batter smacks a ball to the pitcher who turns and looks at the runner and then throws to First to get the batter out, but the runner took off for Home.  Evan Layne, the first baseman, dug the ball out of his mitt and threw a strike to the outside part of the plate, four inches above the ground arriving at the exact moment the runner's sliding foot was speeding toward the plate.  Nick Cardieri, the catcher, with experience way beyond his years, caught the strike and applied the tag.  It was truly a thing of beauty.

The Bulldogs turned Cooperstown into their own hall of fame, with a seamless six, four, three double play that was crisp, clean and sweet in their second game.

In a crucial moment in the late Saturday’s game, Ethan Piros, at Short, snagged hard hit grounder deep in the hole and fired a rope to First to get the out.  There were equally crisp, precise plays from Third and Second: bad hops snagged, long throws targeted, and sharp hits corralled:  no matter who was in the field, the fielding was superb.  When their opponents hit the ball through the infield, second base was not an option for them, the Dogs’ Outfield scooped the rolling balls without hesitation fired them back erecting a wall between First and Second, a bigger wall from Second to Third and finally an ocean from Third to Home.  An ocean that very few were able to cross.

The final game, the trophy match, was played just past noon on Sunday, after an inspiring tour of the baseball hall of fame. The Michigan team, the visitors, led off with a hit and were able to get to First and Third with one out, but that was it, the dogs shut them down.   In the bottom of the first, the Dogs scored with aggressive base running, stealing with such impunity that any Dog who reached First was on Third less than five pitches later.  On the off chance a Dog didn't run on the first pitch after reaching First, Coach Layne would plaintively ask, "why yo still hea?"   The top of the second it was one, two, three for Michigan and the bottom of the second, it was batting around the lineup for the Dogs.   An hour or so later there wasn't much to do, but throw the gloves in the air and charge the mound in the unforgettable moment of victory and an end to a wonderful tournament and a great year.

Bulldog 12's win the 2010 PreSeason NYTB Classic

THESE ARE NO '"BULL" DOGS

In a beautiful first weekend of spring, the Bulldogs won their first tournament of the year at Breezy Point.  They prevailed with a perfect balance of pitching and timely clutch hitting capping their final game with blast over the right center field fence by Evan Layne to clinch the ultimate margin of victory.

The first game of the tournament played in brilliant sunshine but with a chilly ocean breeze saw the Bulldogs lose to the SFX Huskies12s, 6 to 4. This would be the Dogs only loss of the weekend.  With each successive game the team came together, shaking off the cobwebs and dust of the long cold winter.  Their next game was against the SFX Huskies11, after a scoreless couple of innings, the Bulldogs got timely hitting and great pitching and won the game handily.

By the end of the first day, the 12U Bulldogs were even with a victory and a defeat.  But what was evident was that this team was coming together and that they had their best baseball to come.

Sunday was bit cooler but not for the 12U Bulldogs, who came out hot and ready to play.  Scoring runs early in the game, the dogs won easily with great pitching by Ethan Piros completely shutting down Huskies11, strolling to a 7 to 1 victory. This victory set the stage for the drama of the final game.

Since the 12u Bulldogs stood at 2 and 1, they needed to defeat the Huskies12, who were so far undefeated, by 5 runs to win the tournament.  No easy task since they had lost to them in the first game of the tournament.

But these were not yesterdays' Bulldogs.  They hit hard and often, opening up an early 7 to 2 lead, the exact margin of victory to win.  But the Huskies scored and the Dogs' margin had disappeared.  In the fourth with Dogs on first and third, a rising fast ball bearing down on Evan Layne was shot into the cosmos, as if Fort Tilden had fired its long retired cannons, to land over the right center field fence for a three run dinger that proved the game winner and ultimately the Tournaments’ champions.

Coach Marc was ecstatic, "This win was a team effort.  There was great pitching, fielding and hitting...Every one of you should be proud of this win because you had something to do with it".  It was a great first weekend for the 12U Bulldogs, which portends for many more to come.
