General Registration Info/Policies

The baseball season for non-travel players generally runs from the beginning of April to the end of June

The age cutoff birth dates for placement in baseball divisions is APRIL 30 of the current year.  That changed in 2006 across the country.  That means that those born in May, June, or July will be eligible to play in the same division as the prior year.   That allocation will be anticipated on the pre-printed forms.   For those players, requests to play up with the past year's team will be entertained.  Be sure to note any requests in the comments area of the form.

Four year olds who apply to play in the Pee Wee division will be considered, but it must be understood that they will not be placed if they would take the place of a 5 or 6 year old, regardless of whether any of them are late registrants.  Placement of a 4 year old is at our discretion and the parents acknowledge by their application that their 4 year old is physically and mentally capable of interacting with 5 and 6 year olds.

For a list of key dates relating to the baseball season, click here for the Event Calendar when available.

Options for the 12, 13 & 14 Year Old Co-ed Players

1/    The Super Bantam division is for 13 year olds and under and the distances will 80’ bases and 54’ pitching.  The mailed pre-printed forms automatically allocate 13 year olds to the Super Bantam division.  If you are a 13 year old and wish to play in the Grasshopper division, change the division name from Super Bantam to Grasshopper.  If you are 12 year old and wish to play in the Super Bantam division, add the word “Super” to the Division name on the form and pay the $130 fee.

2/   The Grasshopper division is for 14 year olds and under and the distances are major league distances – 90’ bases and 60’6” pitching.  The same is true for the Freshmen division (16 year olds and under)

Currently all registration received from January 14 on are late and will be placed on the waiting list.  See the information at the top of this page about late registration.

TRAVEL TEAM (BULLDOGS) REGISTRATION: is concurrent with regular baseball registration, check the appropriate box on the registration form.

Please address any questions you may have to our registrar:  register@78youthsports.org

Late Registration, Waiting Lists & Refunds

See the information at the top of this page and on the instructions sheet that is with the late registration form to understand how late registrants are handled..  In short, late registrations must be accompanied with an additional, non-refundable $25 late fee and a note indicating your child's skill level for batting, fielding, throwing, and if and how many games your child pitched last season and the name of his/her coach.

Refunds will be made on the following basis:
    1.    Full Refund of fee paid less a $25 administrative fee, if requested prior to the draft of the division of the player requesting the refund;
    2.    Fee paid less 50% if requested after the draft of the division of the player requesting the refund but before the second Saturday of games for baseball; and
    3.    No Refund thereafter.  This also applies if your payment was made in conjunction with a late registration and your child was placed on a team.

We reserve the right, however, to refuse refund of all or part of a fee payment if, in our opinion, the payment made was made to hold a spot in order to shop "organizations."

Refunds are processed at one time once the Treasurer has determined that the checks have cleared - usually one month after the season starts.

Financial Assistance

There are a limited number of reductions available to players for whom the total registration fee poses a hardship.  It is our intention that every child who wants to play gets to play.

Anyone requesting financial assistance must do so in writing (email accepted), prior to our evaluations.   A member of the 78th PYC will contact the applicant to determine eligibility for financial assistance.  All information is strictly confidential.

All players (8 (Ponys) and older) must be evaluated.  All evaluations will be on the date set forth in the chart on the instructions pages of the registration packet and at the beginning of this page.  No one will be evaluated unless he/she has registered on time.  We will accept forms and payments at the evaluations , but your child will not be evaluated that day - you will have to come back on another day which will be announced soon after the last evaluation date.

It is possible that unexpected school functions might cause us to change an evaluation, so please check this website regularly before coming.

To have fair and competitive games, we try to balance the non-travel teams by considering such factors as the player's ability, age, and experience.  Other relevant factors are also considered, including the need for transportation assistance and the tier in which a team may be placed within a baseball division.  It is therefore essential that all players attend the evaluation for his or her division so that we can accomplish that goal.  Also, players desiring to be on a travel team should attend their age appropriate non-travel evaluation.  Your cooperation is very important.

EVERYONE WHO REGISTERS ON TIME FOR A NON-TRAVEL TEAM WILL BE PLACED ON A TEAM.

We attempt to honor requests for coach and teammates, but they cannot be guaranteed.  Also, since divisions are determined by age only (as of April 30) and not school grade, we cannot entertain requests to play with students in the same grade contrary to the age cut off date.

Teams will be created after the evaluations.  We will have instructed all coaches to call their players no later than March 14, 2007.  If you have not been called by March 14, email your division director (whose email address can be found on your division’s home page or the contactus page of this website).

Changing Divisions

In general, Non-travel players may “play up” in an older non-travel division, but players may only “play down” when there is a serious safety issue or other special circumstances and only with the approval of the relevant division director and Commissioner.  These policies are set forth more specifically below.  These exceptions should be brought to the attention of the division director at the evaluation.  The Commissioner also reserves the right to request a player to move up or down.  Travel teams players must play on their age appropriate team.  A player’s “baseball age” is their age on April 30 of the registration year.

Requests to Play Up to an Older Age Group/Division:

Due to the new age cutoff date, we have had a number of requests for players to play up.  Generally that is acceptable as long as the parents and players understand that the level of play increases significantly as the ages go up.  There is one situation, however, that can be dangerous and one which we only allow in exceptional cases:  when an 8 year old requests to play up in the Cub division (9-10s).  The difference in ability and size between 8 and 10 year olds is too much.  So for those who are requesting to have their 7 year olds play up with the 8's because some friends or a coach is handling the 8 year old team, please consider two important things:

1/         The next year, when they are 8 and want to continue with that team, we will allow it for only exceptionally skilled players who we believe can handle playing with 10 year olds (which is a rare case); and

2/         The move from 7 to 8 is a big one - at 8 the players start pitching.  That also means that players will be batting against other players not their coaches.  That element of safety will be removed.

So in most cases (particularly for the 7 and 8 year olds), we believe that it will better in the long run for your child to stay in his/her age group and meet new friends and coaches instead of having to face it a year later.  Kids generally tend to be open to meeting new friends at a younger age.  If they are on an 8 year old team where they know some of the players and the coach they will feel more comfortable having to hit player pitching.  It is for those reasons that we require that any 7 year old wishing to play up into the Pony/8 year old division be evaluated at the Pony evaluations.

Requests to Play Down to an Younger Age Group/Division:

Playing down to a younger age group is generally not permitted because:

1/         of the potential danger it poses to the younger players; and

2/         once a player reaches 9 years old, games are played among the other organizations sharing the permits for the fields.  The controlling body of that organization (to which we belong – the PPBA) requires that they give permission for all players requesting to play down.  They are very stingy about giving permission and generally do so only in cases of a physical or mental disability.  However, we control the decision up through the 8 year olds since we play within our own organization up through that age group.  So for requests from 6 and 7 year olds to play down, we are more liberal.  However, for requests by 8 year old requests to play with the 7s, the issue of danger looms.  So we require that 8 year olds requested to play must be evaluated by us before making a final determination.

I should also note that when making teams for the 5 and 6 year olds (who play together as the Pee Wees) and the 7 year olds (the Lions), we must take into consideration making an even number of teams for scheduling purposes.  So there will be an occasion when some of the older 6 year olds are placed on a 7 year old team.  Our experience has shown that the skill levels between older 6s and 7s are sufficiently similar not to warrant a concern of injury.

I hope that clarifies these issues for you.  In any event, we will work out what is best for your child.
