GIRLS PREP CLINIC (8-9) Once again this year we are pleased to offer a clinic format for girls ages 8-9 in an instructional environment where the emphasis will be on skills development and scrimmage games.  It is designed to ease them into team play in future years.  We call it our Prep Clinic. (Clinics do not have teams nor play in a league format, hence they need not be evaluated prior to the season.)

SENIORS (CO-ED 13-16)  We have also expanded to include 16 year olds in the Senior Co-Ed division with two exceptions: 1/ We will not accept any 16 year olds who are on their school Varsity basketball team and 2/ it will be at the discretion of the VP of Basketball to allow any 16 year olds who are also participating on travel teams of another organization.

ALL PLAYERS (EXCEPT CLINIC AND PREP CLINIC) MUST BE EVALUATED.

Only checks and money orders will be accepted with the late mail-in registration.  DO NOT MAIL US CASH.

General Information about the 2007-8 Season

The season will run from about the last weekend in October 2007 to the last weekend in February March 2008 with the championship games the first weekend of March.  That does not apply to the  Co-ed Clinic (5-7 years olds) and the Girl's Prep Clinic, which will begin a week or so later.   Each team will play on either a Saturday or Sunday.  The schedule for specific time slots cannot be determined until we know the number of teams that will be populated.

Evaluations are Mandatory for all Non-Clinic Players

BASKETBALL UNIFORMS:  We provide a jersey, you must provide the shorts. Please remember that SHORTS WITH POCKETS ARE NOT ALLOWED to be worn because of the possibility of defenders getting their hands accidently caught in the pockets.

VOLUNTEERING: Each coach will be given a form to pass out to all he/her team’s parents.  The form will list jobs necessary to be covered by the parents each game, such as operating the scoreclock, keeping the scorebook, setting up or putting away the chairs, score table, sweeping the floor before the game, and being the team communication point person.  Rather than arbitrarily assigning parents to tasks, we are giving them the choice so they can work it around their schedules.  Parents can substitute this obligation with a teenager, particularly one who needs community service credits.

WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR COACHES & VOLUNTEERS:  Our program is only as good as its volunteer coaches. The time commitment is limited (2 hours each weekend) and the experience is very rewarding.  If you have the time and desire, please become a coach or assistant and email us at basketball@78youthsports.org.   We also need volunteers to help us with very limited tasks that require only a few hours of time and effort. To volunteer, email us as volunteer@78youthsports.org.

Fees

Fees are set forth in the registration form and instructions and the chart above (if still posted).  ONLY CHECKS AND MONEY ORDERS WILL ACCEPTED BY MAIL, AND ONLY CHECKS.  NO CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS OF ANY KIND WILL BE ACCEPTED.

Full payment is expected at the time of registration, in addition to any monies owed from past seasons.  If a player has a previous balance from any sport, he or she will not be allowed to register for a new season.

If  your child wishes to play on a travel team, please indicate so by placing an X next to “Travel Try-Out” on the form or circling that division.  Send the non-travel age appropriate fee and any prior balance with the registration form.  If your child is selected to a travel team, the remaining balance must be paid.

There are no sibling or other discounts.

Returned checks are subject to a $20.00 service charge and a cancellation of the registration.

Late registrations are assessed an additional, non-refundable $20.

General Registration Info/Policies

The basketball season generally runs from the end of October (beginning of November for the Clinics) to beginning of March.

The age cutoff birth dates for placement in basketball divisions is December 31 of the year in which registration occurs.

Registration is first come first served but all players whose forms and payments are received by us by the deadline are guaranteed placement.

We must advise you that we will only accept checks and money orders.  Players who submit forms and payments after the deadline will be considered late.  Late registrants will be assessed a $20 late fee and will be placed on a waiting list with no assurance of placement on a team.  All late registrants, other than Clinic players, must also be evaluated.

MAIL-IN REGISTRATION

A registration form is enclosed in the envelope mailed to you with your child’s data from our database filled in.  Review it and make any relevant changes NEATLY and CLEARLY and in RED INK so we don’t miss them. Please include an EMAIL ADDRESS, all your PHONE #s, the AMOUNT PAID and CHECK #, and SIGN and DATE it.  Mail the form back with a check or money order for the fee AND any previous balance to the address at the bottom of the form.  No cash, credit or debit card payments will be accepted.  Make the check or money order payable to 78th Precinct Youth Council AND write the name(s) of the child(ren) you are registering in the notes section of the check.  The fee schedule is in a chart below.  That’s it!  We must RECEIVE the form and payment NO LATER THAN SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th..

REGISTRATION IN PERSON AT AN EVALUATION WILL NO LONGER BE DONE

We will no longer accept registrations at the evaluations.   Players who submit forms and payments after the final registration date of September 15 will be considered late and will be assessed a $20 late fee.  Late registrants will be placed on a waiting list with no assurance of placement on a team.  All late registrants who are placed, other than Clinic and Prep Clinic players, must still be evaluated.  In fact, evaluation is a prerequisite to placement.

Evaluations are mandatory for all divisions, except the Clinic and Prep Clinic (for which there are no evaluations).  Evaluations will take place for the different divisions for the dates, times, and locations as set forth in the above chart .  Please come at the time allocated for your age group, as noted in the chart.  If not evaluated, players will not be drafted onto a team and will be placed on the wait list and be treated as a late applicant.

TRAVEL TEAM REGISTRATION:  Players desiring to be on a travel team should 1/ indicate so by making on X next to “Travel Try-Out” on the form or circling that division on the form, 2/ pay the non-travel age appropriate fee, and 3/ attend the appropriate non-travel age evaluation.  A travel coach will call all players selected to a travel team or for further try-outs. Travel teams (which play about 40 games from November through March) are created after tryouts.  The fee for travel basketball will be $225 if the team plays in one league and $300 if the team plays in two leagues.   Send the non-travel age appropriate fee and any prior balance with the registration form.  Once your child is selected to a travel team, the remaining balance must be paid.

PRACTICE & GAME SCHEDULES IN GENERAL

After basketball drafts in mid-October, schedules along with a list of division directors and the code of conduct will be posted on the website under the Schedule link on the Home page and each division page.  Otherwise obtain them from your coach.   We expect the season to begin around the last weekend of October (first weekend of November for the Clinics).  We also expect all divisions to play their last games the last weekend of February, with the finals the first weekend of March.  The first weekend for non-Clinic divisions will be reserved for practices only.  Teams are created at the drafts, after which the coaches contact their teams.  The games are on either Saturday or Sunday depending on the division except for legal holidays and when the public schools are closed.  Please refer to the schedule for the exact dates.  The Commissioner of Basketball is Roger Mignott, who can be reached at basketball@78youthsports.org

We have not yet established which divisions will play in which gym and when.  That will be established once we know how many teams will be populated.  In the past, the older players have played at IS51 or IS88, and the younger players have played at PS 282 and PS 321.

Late Registration, Waiting Lists & Refunds

All forms and payments received after the Sept 15 deadline are considered late.  All late applicants must pay an additional nonrefundable $20 late fee and will be placed on a waiting list.  There is no guarantee that anyone on the waiting list will be placed on a team.  If your child is not placed on a team your registration fee, less the late fee, will be refunded to you.

Any applicant who submitted a form prior to the last evaluation but did not make full payment is likewise considered a late registrant and will be placed on the waiting list – but only once the balance of the fee is paid.

Understand that the coaches will be meeting sometime in October to create the teams.  If you have not completed the registration (either by not filing a registration form and/or not making full payment), your child’s name will not be submitted to the coaches meeting as a late registrant.

If you wish to register late, contact the registrar at  register@78youthsports.org for instructions on how to proceed.  Do not mail in forms or payments unless specifically instructed to do so by the registrar.

Refunds for on-time registration payments will be made on the following basis:
1.    Full Refund of fee paid less a $10 administrative fee, if requested prior to the last date of on-time registration;
2.    Fee paid less $35 if requested during the thirty days beginning with the last date of on-time registration; and
3.    No Refund thereafter.   This also applies the situation where your payment was made in conjunction with a late registration and you were informed that your child would be placed on a team.

Late registration payments received by us before the drafts are refunded in full (less the late fee) if the child is not placed on a team.

We reserve the right, however, to refuse refund of all or part of a fee payment if, in our opinion, the payment was made to hold a spot in order to shop "organizations."

All refunds are processed at one time once the Treasurer has determined that the checks have cleared.  This usually occurs one month after the season starts.

Financial Assistance

There are a limited number of reductions available to players for whom the total registration fee poses a hardship.  It is our intention that every child who wants to play gets to play, regardless of ability to pay.

Anyone requesting financial assistance must do so in writing (email accepted), prior to our evaluations.   A member of the 78th PYC will contact the applicant to determine eligibility for financial assistance.  All information is strictly confidential.

Evaluations & Requests

All players (except clinic and prep clinic) must be evaluated.  All evaluations will be on the date set forth in the chart on the instructions pages of the registration packet and at the beginning of this page.  No one will be evaluated unless he/she has registered on time.  We will accept forms and payments at the evaluations, but your child will not be evaluated that day - you will have to come back on another day which will be announced soon after the last evaluation date.

It is possible that unexpected school functions might cause us to change an evaluation, so please check this website regularly before coming.

To have fair and competitive games, we try to balance the non-travel teams by considering such factors as the players’ skills, age, and experience.  Balancing teams is our highest priority.  Requests to place a player with a specific coach or other player may only be honored for a Clinic.  As a result, evaluations are MANDATORY for all non-clinic divisions.  We also discourage players from playing up or down – exceptions are at the discretion of the Division Directors.

This year, to accommodate parent schedules, all evaluations will on one of the two weekend days as noted in the chart above at MS 88.  No one will be evaluated if they have not registered.  To minimize waiting time, please do not arrive prior to the scheduled time for your age group.  Though evaluations will be held at MS. 88, some divisions play their GAMES at other area schools.  Your coach will let you know where your games will be played or you can visit our website for your team’s schedule and gym location once the schedule has been created.

EVERYONE WHO REGISTERS ON TIME FOR A NON-TRAVEL TEAM AND IS EVALUATED WILL BE PLACED ON A TEAM.

Teams will be created after the evaluations.  All timely registrants will be placed on a team.  We will have instructed all coaches to call their players immediately after the drafts.  If you have not been called by October 23, email your division director (whose email address can be found on your division’s home page or the "About Us/Contactus" page of this website).

Changing Divisions

We discourage players from playing up or down.  Exceptions are at the discretion of the Division Directors.  Travel teams players must play on their age appropriate team.  A player's “basketball age” is their age on December 31st of the registration year.
