SPRING 2012 BULLDOGS GENERAL INFO

Each Bulldog team usually play in the NY Travel Baseball Wood Bat League (that runs from mid April until the end of June) which plays doubleheaders on the weekends and a number of tournaments.  We also run a pre-season internal league between Bulldog teams (and sometimes guests) that runs in March through the rest of the season, mainly on weekdays.  All teams participate in a Memorial Day tournament in NJ and the NYTB Spring Season ending tournament the last weekend in June.  Other tournaments are determined between the managers and parents.

PAST ANNOUNCEMENTS

It is with great sadness that we inform the 78th Precinct Youth Council family of the untimely passing of one of its longtime members, John Fernando, who lost his life in a tragic accident on Friday, March 18th, 2011. He was 17 years old.

Johnny, a graduating Senior at The Beacon School in Manhattan and a member of Beacon's Varsity baseball team, played all of his organized baseball with us through the age of 14.  He was highly recruited by colleges, having played his travel baseball with our Brooklyn Bulldogs, Team Connecticut, and Baseball U.  He was planning to play college baseball at SUNY Purchase, where he had been accepted to attend in the fall.

Beyond his extraordinary playing career, John also made significant contributions to the 78th PYC organization and to the community by training younger players in the game of baseball, giving freely of his time to help others to perfect their skills.  Johnny was only the eighth player to be awarded the the Bulldog’s Billy Zitelli Award for having been a superior role model for younger players and an inspiration to all.

His positive attitude, calm demeanor, love of the game, and willingness to bring the best out of others will be remembered by all who knew him.

Words cannot express our grief.  Our condolences go out to his brother, Joe and his parents, Sid and Cynthia Fernando.  We ask everyone to keep the family in their prayers during this difficult period.

The family has requested not to send flowers but instead to donate to this organization by mailing a check to 123 7th Avenue, PMB 202, Brooklyn, NY 11215 (please note on the check re: John Fernando).  You can also donate by credit card through this website by clicking here, then register as a new member (unless you are already registered), select Adult Player Registration on the second screen, enter your contact info on the third screen, then select John Fernando Memorial Donation under the Adult Programs and make your donation.

BULLDOG 9s Finish 11-5 and Runners Up in the NYTB Cubs National Division Summer League.

In an incredible evening of baseball, the Dawgs win the semi-finals on the superb pitching of Philip Bernstein and a walk-off defensive play! Up by one run with a runner on second and two outs, the Cadets batter hit a single to center and centerfielder Miles Ahlgrim rifled a throw home where catcher Luca Lotito made a diving tag to end the game!  The Dawgs then played the finals against the 10u Cadets and took the game down to the wire. Congrats Dawgs!!

BULLDOG 8s Finish 10-2 and Runners Up in the NYTB Summer League.  Great work guys!

HOW TO BECOME A BULLDOG

The Bulldogs are the travel baseball teams of the 78th Precinct Youth Council – from ages 8 to 16 & College.  Each year we teams that begin in the Spring, except the 8 year old team which begins in the summer after playing in our intramural Pony division.  Tryouts for the 8 year old team are in June.

Players are expected to play in their age appropriate team.  The age cutoff date is the date used by all major tournaments: April 30.  Players must try out and be chosen to a team.  No player is guaranteed to be chosen, even if he or she played on a Bulldog team in a prior year.  Try-outs are an on-going process that begin with the weekly indoor skills sessions that run from December through mid-January.  All players are welcome to attend the free winter practice/try-out sessions.  However, all players must register on time and, if requested, attend the organization’s formal evaluations (the dates and places of which will be posted and/or emailed in January).  By no later than  mid-February the managers will chose their roster.   Address all your questions to the Bulldog Director at bulldogs@78youthsports.org

For more on how to register, click here to go to our FAQ section.  Then click on question 5 of the Registration section.  For details on the 2012 tryouts, click here.

TIMETABLE OF KEY EVENTS - 2009 Season:

Regular Spring Season: Mid-March through mid-July:    In 1 or 2 leagues playing approximately 25 (if one league) - 45 games (if two leagues) regular season, followed by playoffs.   Weekend and holiday tournaments are selected by the individual managers with costs to be shared by the players.   Some teams also join a Summer or Fall league.   Summer leagues begin mid to late July and run until Labor Day, some run into September.  Fall leagues start after Labor day and run until late October.

Fee:     $315-Spring 2009 (In addition, the uniform must be purchased - approx. $125 but only if the prior year Bulldog uniform is no longer suitable.)   Expect additional payments for extra batting and pitching coaches.  Teams may play in additional tournaments.  The fee only covers 1 league and 1 tournament fee or 2 league fees.  Additional tournaments, uniforms, and all travel expenses are extra.

For the Spring all players must register with the 78th Precinct Youth Council with all the other players, paying the intramural fee, then the balance when chosen on a Bulldog team.

All Bulldog Spring teams will be selected in early February.  Summer teams generally carry over most Spring players with some added as a result of special tryouts.  An 8 year old team is formed in late June for the Summer.

RULES AND POLICIES

Our philosophy was best stated by Minnesota Twin youth scout team, the New Jersey Twins:

"Often player development becomes secondary due to the overall team goal of winning. By concentrating on the outcome of the game, players lose the ability to try new, more advanced techniques.  In addition, we want players to learn to make their own decisions on the field while the game is in progress. By using this approach, players absorb the game through active learning, as opposed to a passive approach where they are told everything to do.  The success of this philosophy is evidenced by the achievements of those who have already participated and graduated from the program."

The following are various documents that explain our policies and rules.  They are all in acrobat pdf format)  Click on the name of the document to download it.  If you need adobe acrobat, it is free and can be downloaded by clicking on this link.
