Kings 11 and under team win the NY Metro Div II Championship

Over the Memorial Day weekend the Kings 11u Carnegie, 12u Lockley, and 13u Bunton teams participated in the biggest AAU event of the season. Teams from Suffolk Co to Rockland Co, including the five boros, have been playing in a month long tournament to determine the best teams in the region. This past weekend the championships, as well as a few semifinal games before the championship games, were held for all Div I and II qualifying teams.

Shawn Carnegies' 11u team started the day off with a big win in the championship game. In only their 1st full season together this team came together at the perfect time and wowed the crowd with an incredible effort. They played the New Heights (Westchester) team for the second time in this tournament. The first match was a double overtime thriller in pool play. Do we see the beginning of a rivalry?

Next up was the 13u team that has had many trips to the finals in several tournaments this year, but has not been able to win more than one this season. After a tough semifinal game in which our young ballers eked out a two point win with some very clutch free throw shooting from (lil E) Ian Roach, they came up short in the chip against the national powerhouse Northeast Lightning (formerly Westchester Hawks) and took home the silver medal.

Last, but not least, our 11u Lockley squad, lost a heartbreaker in their semifinal game. The Kings dominated early on, but the the last couple of minutes was a back and forth affair with the Millbank Team (Harlem) hitting the winning basket in the final minute of play to knock off our hometown Kings by ONE Point! Tears came, but the kids quickly got themselves together and received thier bronze medal with their heads up high! Go Kings!

Overall, the teams went 15 - 2 against the best comp in the area. Please do not be fooled by the Div II distinction either. Over twice as many teams compete at Div II than Div I, for whatever reason.

Brooklyn Stand up!!!  Hats off to the 2010 Brooklyn Kings 10s, 11s, 12s, 13s, and 14s for a phenomenal season. After a tough start the young Kings picked it up in the playoffs in several leagues managing to pull off no less than five Championships.  Not a bad job for our inaugural season.  In many of the tournaments that the young ballers did not win they still managed to wind up in the finals in four more.
A big round of applause is due to our courageous coaches, who battled the winter elements and a few bad tournament directors, to lead our kids to victory! Big shout out to Rick Small, Shawn Carnegie, Mike Lockley, Mike Bunton, Roger Mignot and George Dalton. Also, thanks to the team coordinators, Zo ann Wilkins and Lorraine McEvily for the hard work and dedication, without them this season doesn't happen!
Please click on the individual team page to view the tournament wrap up for each particular team.

Big congratulations to the Brooklyn Kings 12 U team for a great showing at the Rod Strickland summer tournament in the Bronx! Big wins over Riverside Church and Metro Hawks allowed the Kings to finish as the second seed overall. In the championship game the Kings jumped out to a 13 to 1 start before the Gauchos team was able to steady itself and climb back into the game by the half. In the end an experienced Gauchos team lived up to the rep as one of the strongest teams in the area. Brooklyn Kings hold your heads high! A phenomenal effort by all and especially to Jeriah Shambley and Kenneth Davis double digit scoring to knock off the Metrohawks in the semifinal game. Big shout to Kelvin (Sparky) Sparks for his All tournament Sportsmanship Award, and proving once again, that smallest player can sometimes have the biggest impact.

Now it is on to the championship game at the St John Rec Center summer league vs Brooklyn power house Team Max. After finishing with the top seed in their division the Kings endured a grueling playoff with a big win over the same Riverside Team that had beaten them in the Metro Districts in April. With the prior meeting vs Team Max ending with Max as the victor can the Kings build on their success uptown and find a way to get the job done?

Stay tuned...

HOW TO BECOME A KING /TRYOUTS

Each year the Kings field teams for kids 8 to 14 yrs old. Our fall session will run from November thru April. Our Summer session will run from late May thru early June. We have our first tryouts for our fall session around late September early October. Tryouts for our summer session will take place in April. Tryouts for our team are almost year round, so if you have just found out about our program and would like to request a tryout during the middle of the season just send a email us and we will try to accommodate you.

Just because you have played with us before does not mean that you are guaranteed a spot for the next season, this is a competitive program, we urge kids to always work on their games. Parents, after your child has made the team and you have paid, it does not mean that he will have guaranteed playing time. Again, we are a competitive organization, playing time must be earned and is entirely up to the coaches discretion.

AGES

Our teams are set up by age according to AAU age requirements.  The calendar year is between September 1st and August 31st.  The age your child will be turning during that calendar will be his age group.  For example, if your child is ten years old as of September 1st turning 11 before August 31st, he would be considered 11 and under (11U).  Very few children perform well above their appropriate age group, for that reason we generally do not allow kids to play up, but if you have a special request please email the director of Travel Basketball.

There is a  little bit of confusion when it comes to grades and Grade Exceptions.  Every child's group is determined by the calendar year described above, no matter what grade he is in.  If your child has a "late birthday", meaning his birthday takes place in September, October, November, or December and he is in the grade ahead (i.e. 11 year old going to seventh grade or 12 year old going to eighth grade) he would still play the age group that he will be turning by August 31st of the following year regardless of the grade he is in.  The 11 year old turning 12 would be a 12U, the 12 year old turning 13 would be a 13U.

A Grade exception is a player that has been left back in school for whatever reason and is a year older than the children in his current class.  For AAU purposes, a player that is older and has been kept back for a year can apply for a Grade Exception, meaning an 11 year old fifth grader that would be turning 12 before August 31st may apply for an Exception because of his grade. Each team is allowed up to three Grade Exceptions. The Kings as an organization do not currently have any Grade Exceptions.  For  more info contact us @ kings@78pyc.org

WHO WE ARE

Brooklyn Kings is a basketball club that provides quality basketball instruction to children in Brooklyn, an area in vital need of kids’ sports and recreation.

We do not consider ourselves an AAU program.  Instead, we look to participate in AAU-sanctioned as well as non-sanctioned tournaments.  We believe in going where the competition is.

One of our main goals is to prepare kids for their middle school and high school basketball teams.  A constant refrain is that the American game of basketball has deteriorated due to the lack of fundamentals.  We supplement our own in-house coaching by bringing in high school coaches, who offer clinics emphasizing basketball skills and fundamentals.

FEES

The Brooklyn Kings basketball club is currently seeking sponsorship.   At this time, all of our funding comes from our dedicated parents.

TOURNAMENTS

We’re approaching our second full season as a basketball club.  In our first season, the Brooklyn Kings participated in more than 10 tournaments between our three teams: age 10 and other, age 11 and under, and age 12 and under.

2009 KINGS HIGHLIGHTS

· Age 10 and under competed in the semi-finals of the King Street Kings Tyranny of Champions and was defeated by the nationally-ranked D.C. Assault Team.

·    Age 11 and under was a finalist in the Scan Holiday Tournament as well as Coach Carlton Screen’s 12 and under Classic.  The team was also a semi-finalist at the Basketball Spotlight Tournament, losing to the nationally-ranked F.A.C.E.S program.

·    Age 12 and under completed in the finals at the St. John’s Recreation Christmas Tournament.

In addition, we’ve played in the Metropolitan Metro Districts Championship in Island Garden, New York; Gauchos Round Ball Classic and other elite tournaments in the New York metro area, featuring some of the best basketball teams in the country.

WHERE WE'RE HEADED

While the Brooklyn Kings is a new program, our name recognition is growing.  We foresee having a new age 10 and under team every year.  Due to the high demand for quality basketball instruction, we plan on developing A and B teams for each age group (4th through 8th grades).  Our primary focus is to instruct 4th through 8th graders because we believe this is the most underserved age group.

We anticipate offering six to seven quality tournaments each season.  Our Winter Season begins in November 2009 and runs through May 2010.  Our Summer Season runs from June 2010 through August 2010
